Limitations are how we optimize our potential

Why did it take me so long to understand this?
Limitations are how we optimize our potential

I used to live my life with no limitations. My motto was “we are infinite beings, so why should I act otherwise?”

There’s some truth in there, but I couldn’t have been more naïve and blinded to the truth. We may be infinite on some plane, but not here on Earth.

As humans, limitations and constraints create the container we must optimize ourselves within in order to reach outside that box and perceive new heights.

Acknowledging our constraints allows us to set the parameters necessary to recognize our potential within that container, set our goals accordingly, and realize that infinite nature… step by step.

What was missing for me with my youthful perspective was hard work. Not working hard—I liked to work on the things that came easy to me—but the hard work required to develop the new skill(s) necessary to accomplish a certain goal.

In other words, my limitation was a lack of skills, and my motto had me blinded to the truth that I needed to suck it up and do the hard work to develop those skills.

In my case, it’s marketing. I love doing all the things to produce content or products (writing, video editing, brainstorming), but planning out a strategy to launch and release something has always just bred in me resistance.

(In those moments I sit down to do it, literally anything can and will distract me!)

After years of trying to find shortcuts and workarounds (unsuccessfully), I finally acknowledged that I needed to fix this if I wanted to find independence in this life, and got to work.

And as with anything, once I dived in and started seeing a clearer picture of what was required to market successfully, I realized that there was much more involved… it started with my mindset.

I learned that it wasn’t actually planning out a strategy that held me back—truthfully, I love doing it!—but consistency. Why plan out a strategy if I wouldn’t hold to it?

So I zoomed in even more and saw the issue rooted in my routine. Excuses were everywhere—kids, moving, travel, parties—and I would let them all butcher my routine.

Now I’ve narrowed in on my container for professional growth—acknowledged my constraints as what’s required by me as father, husband, etc—and focused on building an unshakeable routine so that nothing short of a serious emergency will halt my progress towards my goals.

Yes, there are kids, yes there are parties and adventures, yes there are visitors… but my fundamental routine is now strong enough to withstand the chaos.

What are your current limitations? How do you work with them?
